John W. Bishop was born October 18, 1828, in Indiana to Elias Bishop and Elizabeth Grant Schulkill. He died in 1879 at Emporia, Kansas.

He married Susanna Jane Utterback on May 10, 1846, in Boone County, Indiana.

The 1856 Iowa state census shows the family living in Polk County with four children: William P., age seven; Elias, age six; James H., age 4, and George W., younger than one year.

The 1870 federal census shows the family in Chelsea, Butler County, Kansas, but using the El Dorado post office. The couple has eight children, the four already mentioned and John, age 11; Albert R., age 10, Sarah M., age six, and Francis A., age three.
