There is nothing of importance to report relative to affairs about this Post, save that quite a large body of Indians have been removed from the Grand Rond to the Siletz Agency. Among them, were Old man John's Band, the Galise Creeks, Limpy's band (now Joe Lane's) and a good many of the Applegates, altogether near three hundred, leaving at the Grand Rond but one band, George's, that were ever hostile, while of the Eighteen hundred at the Siletz all have been hostile and are at present dissatisfied. This is now unquestionably the most important post on the Reservation and there should be at least one additional company here. As soon as the General commanding shall have decided regarding the location of this Post, may I respectfully request to be informed as soon as practicable, as if it goes over the mountains, we have no time to spare. 2nd Lieut. Wm T. Gentry 4th Infantry having been assigned to my company, and having reported for duty on the 13th Instant, I directed him to relieve 2nd Lieut. P. H. Sheridan 4th Infantry in the duties of a.a.g.m. and a.a.c.s. at this Post. Lieut Sheridan being anxious to rejoin his company, from which he has been absent two years, I have directed him to do so and he left this Post this morning for Fort Jones, via Vancouver.
I have conversed with the Indian Agent at the Siletz Agency regarding the location of this Post, so far as it concerns the Indian Department.
He thinks the main Post should be where it is now, to allay apprehension on the part of the Settlers, and that a detachment of twenty five or thirty men at the Agency would be all that would be required to preserve order and enforce the Regulations of the Department. In case of emergency, the balance of the command could be thrown there in a day.
