CHANDLER'S LETTER

      The following letter from the Secretary of the Interior, will be perused with interest by our readers, as it fully settles the long-mooted question of the removal of the Alsea Indians:

DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR.
WASHINGTON, March 3, 1875.

      SIR:–Referring to your verbal statement to me that the Alsea Special Agency in Oregon should be abolished. I have to inform you that the matter was brought to the attention of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, who informs me that steps have already been taken to discontinue the special agency referred to, as soon as practicable this spring.
      I have issued to him the authority to remove the Indians of the Alsea Agency to the Siletz Reservation in Oregon, and to instruct Mr. Geo. P. Litchfield, the special agent in charge at Alsea, to turn over the public property in his posssession to the agent for the Indians of the Siletz Agency.
