ALSEA RESERVATION ABANDONED.
–––

Since our last reference to this subject in the columns of the GAZETTE, the following from the Salem Daily Stateman of Oct. 1st, is the only reliable information we have received on the subject, and will be of interest to our readers:
"From Mr. G. P. Litchfield, who has been, the past several years, the Indian Agent at the Alsea Reservation, and who arrived in this city yesterday afternoon with his family, we learn that on the 16th ult. he vacated by order of the U S Government, the Reservation turning all the government property over to Mr. Wm Bagley of the Siletz agency. The reservation is now open for settlement. Quite a number of squatters are already there, and a number of the more civilized Indians have located claims. As this is the first reliable information respecting the actual abandonment of this reservation, settlers and prospectors, the next several weeks, will be plenty in that vicinity."
